Chemical peel is a treatment to make your skin smoother and brighter. The process is as simple as applying a chemical solution to your skin to encourage peeling of the top layers. Then the new skin grows back for a better look and feel. While it might sound simple, there are things you need to know before deciding to go with this treatment.

Chemical peel should be done at a trusted clinic as this isn’t a do-it-yourself type of treatment. Often done on face, neck and hands, the treatment mostly used to reduce fine lines under the eyes as well as wrinkles on the neck area. Some also opt for chemical peel to treat acne, reduce age spots, freckles and melasma.

There are three common types of chemical peel. The first one is light chemical peel, which removes only the outer layer of skin and are used to treat fine lines, acne, uneven skin tone and dryness. Light chemical peel can be done often according to your desired result. Then there is medium chemical peel which removes also the upper part of your middle skin layer. This one is perfect if you need to rid stubborn wrinkles or acne scars. The last one is deep chemical peel which removes mid to lower part of your middle skin layer. This procedure can only be done once.

Before the procedure, you might need to stop taking certain medication and taking a different set to prepare your skin for the peel. Consult with your doctor about this. Depending on the chemical type used for the peel procedure, your skin may experience things like redness and scaling. It takes up to two weeks to see the end result. After Chemical peel, your skin will be more sensitive to the sun for a while. So wear sunscreen every day, if you haven’t already, and make sure it’s above SPF 30. Limit your time under the sun, especially when it’s really bright outside around lunchtime.

There are also several treatments needed to heal the skin properly like applying cream. Depends on the type of chemical peel you’re signing up to, there might be needs to take antiviral medication. Avoid wearing make up right away to avoid unnecessary side effects, infection and scarring.
